New Bed
We made William a bed because Luke was getting too big for the bassinet and we didn't want to buy another crib mattress, so William moved to a twin size! I found these instructions for the bed on Knock Off Wood where she has really nice instructions for all kinds of furniture. Mostly Pottery Barn knock-offs, hence the name.

Beautiful bed and beautiful room! Ana shared your blog with me because I am trying to build this bed from her plans. You mentioned you added some hardware to make the headboard and footboard detachable. Could you tell me exactly what kind of hardware it is, the correct name and size for those pieces (you called it a router?) I would like to make my bed the way you guys did. I'd appreciate that!
ReplyDeleteWe got the hardware from a store called Woodcraft, I think they have stores all over or you could buy online, we found them just by googling "bed hardware". We had to put them on a different way than what they are meant for because in Ana's plan, the inside edge of the rail goes right up against the inside edge of the 4x4 so there is no place to screw in the angled piece. If you look at this picture, http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=5783&filter=bed%20hardware you will see the way the hardware is meant to be used and compare that picture to the one Ana posted to see what we did. We put the angled piece on the rail and the flat piece on the headboard or footboard instead of the other way. I'm sure you could also do it without a router, but then you would have about a 1/4" gap between your headboard and rails, we just wanted it to be flush. You would use the router to make an indent in the wood where the hardware would fit in (just like hinges on a door). Hopefully that makes sense!
ReplyDeleteThank you, that was very helpful!
ReplyDeleteThe new bed looks great! You didn't tell me you were making a bed. It also shows off how cute and coordinated his room looks. And, of course, how cute the quilt looks. By the way, how come Grandma Julie gets a footnote, and I don't? JK :)
ReplyDeleteThe bed looks AWESOME! Great job! I just found Ana's site a week ago and I'm so excited to get started. Little bit scared to start on the bed project until I get something simpler under my belt. You did a fantastic job!
